Within the decimated ruin of a temple

Post by Deesul »

Once a grand hallway filled with alcoves dedicated to various so
named Immortals, there is little left to distinguish this as a temple
at all. The roof has caved, chunks of it scattered across the floor
and leaving the inside of the building exposed to the elements.
Obvious Exits: South

Deesul kneeled within the old shrine to the lame gods that was referenced in some of the old texts he had burned from the library, and began to pray to Zoran. He felt odd praying to an empty room, instead of before the audience of Zoran himself. But Everett had taught Deesul that Zoran was an altogether different sort of god than he was used to. A subtler god. A ubiquitous god. Zoran was the sky and the thunder, the earth and the sea. Only the shadow of His avatar could be seen in the place between life and death, and even then His divine presence was overwhelming enough to stun Deesul though his Sense had waned so immediately upon his arrival.

"Mighty Zoran of the sky, I beg you grant me portents. I wish only that your will be done through me, but I know not how to deal with these wretched unbelievers. They cannot comprehend Faith, and argue against your very existence with logic and science. Even so, I feel your will is not to let their souls slip away into the aether. They must be Saved! Grant me the strength and wisdom to convince them of your supreme benevolence - that you alone stand between life everlasting and the nothingness of the vacuous space between the stars."

Deesul kneeled for hours upon hours, waiting for His sign. Suddenly, a rogue bolt of lightning cracked the heavens wide open, and struck a rusted piece of metal nearby. Deesul was thrown aside, unharmed. He quickly regained his senses, noticing a small fire had lit a stray piece of debris at the base of the collapsed roof that now touched the floor. Smoke and dust motes littered the air, making Deesul cough. Rubbing his eyes clear, he looked up at the dust floating through the air lighted by the crackling fire... and in it saw the face of Zoran. In Deesul's mind, he saw a great statue at the end of an elegant hall. He had his sign, and there was much work to be done.

A crack of roaring thunder splits the heavens, descending on Moorgate just north of the Monks' Guild.
It was the year 130, the 4th evening of Frost Fall. The sun began to set across the land of Cosrin.

Hearing the noise, Lothaine made his way to the sound's origin, sword in hand.

Within the decimated ruin of a temple
Once a grand hallway filled with alcoves dedicated to various so
named Immortals, there is little left to distinguish this as a temple
at all. The roof has caved, chunks of it scattered across the floor
and leaving the inside of the building exposed to the elements.
Obvious Exits: South

Lothaine looked around the rubble. Moorgate was no stranger to destruction, but this was different. The sound he had heard wasn't the cause of all this... The temple had been ruined before this night.

Entity flies in from the south. The sprite hovers in the room.
Entity inclines his head and nods slightly to acknowledge your presence.
Entity says 'Greetings.'

You greet Entity heartily.
Lothaine asks 'It's been a while since we've spoken. Entity, correct?'

Entity nods slowly
Entity says 'Yessir'

Lothaine asks 'How are you?'

Entity says 'I'm ok thanks'
Entity smiles.

You see Lothaine sheath his weaponry in one swift, fluid motion.
Lothaine puts his arcing elemental short sword and mithril buckler in his backpack
You give a quick nod.

Entity asks 'How are things with yourself?'

Lothaine says 'I had been away for a while... Away but never gone. But I'm back again. There is much to be done.'

Entity smiles.

You flash a bright smile.
Lothaine asks 'Have you heard of Everett?'

Entity blinks at the sound of that name.
Entity says 'Indeed...'
Entity peers at you, looking for a vital clue.
Entity asks 'What do you know about him?'

You rub your chin, deep in thought.
Lothaine says 'I met with him. He had requested an audiance with me.'

Entity says 'Oh, interesting...'
Entity looks around the temple...
Entity says 'We did this... for him...'
Entity gives a sly smile.
Entity says 'Zoran doesn't appreciate the false gods being worshipped at these temples...'
Entity says 'So we kinda took care of that.'

Lothaine says 'Who is we? Certainly I can suspect Deesul.'
You let slip a merry chuckle.

Entity says 'Oh... I enticed some barbarian into getting explosives for me with a promise of riches... Some dwarven fellow.'

Lothaine says 'Oh, interesting.'
Lothaine asks 'Do you remember this barbarian's name?'

Entity says 'Let's see....'
Entity flips through some notes
Entity says 'Thordin.'
Entity nods.

You give a thoughtful "Hmm..."
Lothaine says 'Sounds familiar.'
Lothaine asks 'What can you tell me about Everett?'

Entity says 'Not much to be honest....he was kinda secretive....'
Entity says 'He says he's here on a mission from Zoran'
Entity says 'To rid the world of these false gods or something'
Entity nods.

You rub your chin, deep in thought.
Lothaine says 'He's asked me to... help him. And to enlist the aid of my fellow mages.'

Entity says 'Interesting...'

Lothaine says 'He's looking for something.'

Entity asks 'Oh, did he say what?'

Lothaine says 'He's certain that the island of Cosrin is somehow an important stepping stone on his journey.'

Entity gives a thoughtful "Hmm..."

Lothaine says 'It's in my nature to suspect. Though seemingly well meaning... it's difficult to fully understand him.'

Entity nods towards you.

Lothaine says 'He's not as direct as I'd like, but I understand majority of his meaning. Problem is...'

Entity says 'I don't get any feeling that he is trying to manipulate us for his own gain....'
Entity says 'I truly believe he is, or he believes he is, a messenger of Zoran.'

Lothaine says 'To me, it feels as though he's speaking as though we couldn't understand his true motives. There may be more to this.'
Lothaine says 'I do believe in Zoran's existance. To what extent that is relevant has yet to be seen.'

Entity nods towards you.

Lothaine says 'I also refuse to believe he's the only god.'
Lothaine says 'People must have worshipped multiple gods for a reason. It would be foolish to simply accept a singular god.'
You ponder on the problem for a moment.

Entity says 'Yes, but you would think they would have tried to show their influence...'

Lothaine says 'Everett speaks of an island. That's what he seeks.'
Lothaine says 'Entity, those gods may indeed be false. But why so many statues if there wasn't the possibility, the shred of chance that there may in fact be a reason to that.'

Entity says 'Maybe someone previous used them to have some sort of hold over other mortals...'
Entity says 'I know if someone told me when I was a little kid that if I was naughty and set the cat on fire, that the god of Ebilness would come get me... I'd do what I was told....'
Entity shudders at the thought of it all.

Lothaine says 'There are limitless possibilities. That's all I'm saying.'

Entity nods towards you.

Lothaine says 'And Zoran, appears to be one of them at this juncture in time.'

Entity says 'True....'

Lothaine says 'Still though, Everett seeks an island. No doubt this is important to his quest regarding Zoran.'

Entity nods towards you.
Entity says 'What's the worst that can happen...'
Entity gives a quick grin.

Lothaine says 'But, like I said, he's not very direct. I don't know if the island is figurative, or literal.'

Entity ponders on the problem for a moment.
Entity nods.

Lothaine asks 'Have you heard of the monk called Zeya?'

Entity says 'Yes...'
Entity frowns.
Entity says 'He tried to stop us blowing up the temple.'

Lothaine says 'He's been sailing around Cosrin, searching by sea. He hopes to somehow gain a perspective that will help.'
Lothaine says 'Personally... I suspect he'll find nothing.'

Entity says 'Interesting, considering that he almost tried to kill me after our little... incident'

You let out a deep sigh and look to the heavens for hope.

Entity ponders on the problem for a moment.

Lothaine says 'He's an odd Monk indeed.'

Entity says 'Yes... yes he is...'

Lothaine says 'What do you think about this island? A more literal approach would be to... perhaps search by air.'

Entity asks 'By air?'
Entity lets forth a horrified "Gasp!"
Entity says 'I can only fly so high.....'
Entity flutters his wings.

Lothaine says 'It could be... perhaps a floating island. Or... something near but not of this realm.'
You shrug your shoulders casually towards Entity.

Entity gives a soft "Coo".
Entity says 'Maybe...'
Entity looks up
Entity ponders on the problem for a moment.

Lothaine says 'Everett... I should like to know more about this... man.'

Entity says 'Yes, you and I both...'
Entity says 'I hope we can learn much from him'

You smirk at Entity.
Lothaine says 'He smelled of whiskey. Bet he wouldn't mind talking more about his mysterious island over a drink.'

Suddenly Entity points a finger in the air as an idea forms.
Entity says 'Yes... great idea...'
Entity says 'A crate of Branders Bliss ought to do it'

Lothaine says 'We may even ask a few local bars if they've seen him. Certainly... a man preaching the existance of a divine entity doesn't go unnoticed. '

Entity nods towards you.

Lothaine asks 'Ask around, would you?'

Entity says 'Sure thing'

Lothaine says 'And tell other mages of this... Everett and his island.'

Entity bows towards you.

Lothaine says 'There's certainly more to this.'

Entity nods.
Entity gives a quick wave.
Entity flies to the south, his flutter full of purpose.

Lothaine looked up at the night sky.
The moon is at its apex across the land of Cosrin
The star constellation of The Silver Lady dominates the night sky

No doubt Entity was attracted to the sound also, but Lothaine's request sent him fluttering away with new concerns. Lothaine peered about the room to find the source. His eyes settled on a smoldering piece of earth. "Interesting," he spoke to himself. Satisfied for the time being, Lothaine left, boots crushing some rubble on his way out.

Entity's search led him to the Salty Sea Dog Tavern. There he conversed with Captain Byrdci, inquiring about the stranger Everett, a man with a hooded cloak, "talking about some sort of divinity", with a preference for whiskey.

Later the next morning... Entity flutters in from the west

Spotting Lothaine, Entity approached and spoke plainly.
Entity says 'Well, it appears he likes to hang around the Salty Seadog...'
Entity says 'According to the Cap'n'

You give a quick nod.
Lothaine says 'Thank you.'

Entity nods towards you.
Entity says 'I hope you find him. I'm interested in what he has to tell us'
Entity smiles.

You nod your head at Entity.
Lothaine says 'I'll pass along any information I find.'

Entity gives a quick wave.

Entity disappears in a sparkle of dust!
Entity dissapears with a loud popping noise!

The sun has begun to set across the land of Cosrin.
it is Evening of day 20 of Frost Fall of the year 130.

Lothaine and Deesul stood among the ruins of the former temple. Having worked tirelessly to haul a sizable amount of building materials to the future shrine of Zoran, they stood for a moment in quiet contemplation of their next step.

Entity has come to me with a personal request to assist in rebuilding the temple. I had done basic construction training as part of the Moorgate Fighters' Guild training programme so that we may setup outposts in the wilderness and i believe that my skills can be put to use here.

Unfortunately, due to the passage of time, the building and construction materials that Lothaine had hauled to the area is now ruined and crumbling.

I am urging all citizens who can help to bring Granite, Lumber or any other building materials to the Decimated ruins of a temple so that we can rebuild the temple as a tribute to Zoran!

The hulking ogre-man Hakedo reads the written call for granite and lumber aid. He nods and determines to offer his contributions, but cocks his head and frowns. Temple of Zoran? he wonders. Who is Zoran, why is there a temple dedicated to him, and most importantly, where IS it?

He saunters off, scanning the Moorgate cityscape in search of the ruined building.

O'Dillion was sitting at the bar of the casino, swirling the ice around in a glass of whiskey, watching it melt.

"Have you even heard a word i have said?" Pratt asked with a sigh.

"I heard you..." O'Dillions sigh echoed Pratts own, and he continued. "of course we are going to help, that was the point of the casino, to re-charge the life in this city. We will do whatever it takes to see Moorgate an economic and cultural center again."

"...but you still have reservations?"

The boss nodded, never looking away from the slowly dying chunks of ice. "This Entity fellow seems completely off his nut. Vez has a sound head on his shoulders, but I still have my doubts he has enough experience for such a massive undertaking. We will let it play out, but stay sharp, there may come a time soon when it would be best if we stepped in, and took over."

"probably right." was all Pratt could say. he had made the same assessment during his meeting at the shrine. "What about Entitys claims that this is a divine message form Zoran?"

O'Dillion snapped his jaws loudly. "You know how i feel about the zealots and religious types. Oh sure, i can hit my knees and grovel to the magic above, when it seems beneficial... We will just have to wait and see. Whoever is behind this, i will be interested to meet them nonetheless."

Again O'Dillions words had been what Pratts was already thinking. They both sat in silence for a while, until the ice in O'Dillions drink finally melted, he threw it back and pushed himself away from the bar. "well, you coming? I need to see a man about a forrest."

Sweat matted his already short hair as Kazak lugged a sack full of granite chunks before the temple. Despite it being the month of Frost Fall, the day was warm with the overhanging sun and collection had been quite the task. He gazed up at the ruined building with a mixture of awe and wonder in his eyes, pondering what sort of calamity could have befallen the once-majestic temple.

Then with a shrug, he upended the sack of granite in the center of the temple. They clunked as stone hit stone. Kazak tossed the empty sack aside and knelt down for a word of prayer, hoping in his soul that the gods, if they were still out there, would hear and perhaps even offer down an answer.

Vez attends at the construction site and makes a note of the progress.

Yes....yes...Very good. We are bringing in a fair amount of granite and other stone so far.... No sign of the promised timber though. Without the wood to build a structure, this project is doomed before it even starts.

I'll have to get on to those pesky rogues and see what the deal is.

Hmm.... We need to find a workforce to do all the manual labour too....

O'Dillion, What is the status of the timber deliveries?

A bunch of Dwarves were sent down by Krafty with a few carts full of Granite, we're now ready to begin construction as soon as The Outfit can provide the promised timber.

Vez and a small volunteer workforce contingent from the Fighters Guild get busy with setting out the granite and stone in preperation for the timber wood to build the frame.

"I sure hope O'dillon hasn't done something stupid and got himself kidnapped"

"As soon as the timber arrives, we can set out the frame and get to work rebuilding this temple"

While traipsing around Moorgate Ava notices a group of fighters near the construction site. Curiousing about what they are doing, she moves closer and overhears something about moving timber wood. She remembers that O'Dillion had once said this to her when she first arrived in Moorgate, that he was making plans to move Timberwood to Moorgate. At the time she had thought little of it, but now, with a brand new herb pouch around her neck, she began to think that she liked Timberwood just fine where it was, with all the gardens and treehouses and lakes and so on.

She frowns and decides she had better tell someone who knows what to do about these plans. Where was Guildmaster Lothaine when she needed him?

Hearing of the renewed interest in the building of a shrine to Zoran, Lothaine approached the would-be-construction site with anticipation. Much to his disappointment, nothing had transpired during his slumber. 'All the building material is ruined,' he thought to himself. A rather trivial matter in truth, after all, they were so simple to acquire last time.

With a reluctant nod, Lothaine decided to donate to this endeavor once more. Welcoming the opportunity to the feel the breeze in his hair, he turned and whistled for his dragon - he would go and fetch them himself. 'A simple task by air,' he concluded.

After six trips, Lothaine's dragon began to tire. "We're all done here, don't worry about another trip," he told his dragon. "To be honest, I'm not sure this building material is even going to be put to use. All these people are wanting to build a temple, and for what?" he asked. "They want it for themselves. If they really cared for Zoran, they would help us organize another attempt to reach that island..."

The ordinary bridge

Post by Yahgrk »

The bridge is rather ordinary looking, owing its craftsmanship to no race in particular, something a diligent craftsman would notice. Otherwise, this bridge is conspicuous in its derelict manner. Originally wide enough to fit two carts, perhaps a column of marching infantry or to accommodate trolls, it has now collapsed in the middle, the thick blocks of stone have fallen out of sight into the dark ravine below. A stone archway remains above the entrance, it depicts a wicked dragon beast at battle with a undaunted hero.

The surrounding woodland has encroached heavily on the bridge, choking the bridge making it very difficult to spot from above whereas the original road has since been swallowed by the march of nature. Very little light breaks through the canopy. Noticing this bridge from above or the ground would prove challenging but not impossible, an ordinary bridge in the ordinary woodlands of Ashwood.

***

The length of the ravine glows blue exposing its deep sides, its light casts shadows off the ancient trees with seem to unnaturally dance as if alive. An illuminated orb appears above the broken segment of bridge and pulsates; with each pulsation a wave of cold energy ripples outwards, spreading further with each pulse, with each ripple.

A shattering sound pierces the air as the orb, volatile in appearance, explodes throwing out powerfully negative energy. As the wave breaks amongst the wood, fauna and bridge they are immediately frozen, entombed in thick ice, the wave culminates in a bright blue flash followed by a smothering silence.

***

A disembodied voice distorts the silence as a sledgehammer would distort a thick slab of stone, "Awaken. Yield to my command, my eternal servitude as i breathe life unto you. Bring worthy sacrifice. Bring worship. Bring adulation."

A screeching wind blows across the bridge whilst the disembodied voice assimilates the chanting of many bodies.

The ice on the archway begins to crack, the archway topples inwards, the fresh rubble and melting ice form a mound at the entrance. A piece of the broken archway buried within the mound, a serpentine eye from the dragon, flickers with life. The swelling chanting continues as a form appears from the mound. Yahgrk steps out of the rubble, a dragonkin formed from the thematic archway carving.

Yahgrk steps forward and tests his body and wings, tightening his powerful muscles and beating heavy wings. A great power surges through the dragonkin, incredible godly power, he crackles with magic, radiating supremacy, a nova of pure energy.

Yahgrk roars his allegiance and servitude to the life giver.

The chanting changes immediately, heavy and grating, each word slams against Yahgrk crushingly. The wind returns and as if a feather, pulls Yahgrk over the ravine. He struggles, fighting with his immense power but to no avail. The intensity of the chanting escalates. The winds swell containing the dragonkin with his wings stretched above the deep ravine, the chanting voices become unintelligible. The beating winds scythe at the scales of the dragonkin, cutting thinly but readily. The dragonkin roars and fights, his wings beat but no relief is gained. Soon droplets of black blood appear over the dragonkin's body. The buffeting wind continues to cut and draw blood forming a black mist that surrounds Yahgrk, obscuring the frozen ordinary bridge.

Yahgrk's strength begins to fail him, the chanting booms in his head, he winces in pain, the strong beating wings falter to a limp. The mist darkens and in this darkness, with a lucid thought he began to understand, perhaps too late; the darkness was solid and real. He could feel it quest his limbs, exploring and moving, gliding through his conscious. It slipped behind his eyes, into his mouth, into his lungs...

***

Odd stone blocks of the bridge faintly pulse a dim blue glow, the ravine returns to darkness, the trees remain blasted with thick ice and the fallen archway reduced to a mound of rubble has lost its depiction of heroics, instead replaced by a basic impression of what was once whole.

The ordinary bridge remains.
