Guild Titles

Post by Khaji »

Greetings Monks!

The time has come to choose new guild titles, as the current ones like "Guild Rank 26" are not very interesting.
I would like everyone to suggest new titles, when the only rule is that we're not allowed to just copy the old ones.
There are 31 guild titles, and you gain one each 5 guild levels.

If you have a suggestion please post it here. If suggesting more than one title, post them in some structured way so we can know which titles are higher and which lower, but you don't have to post a full list of 30 titles.

When i feel we have a list ready I will send it to admin for approval and after that we'll have a poll about it.
I'm not really giving a deadline on titles, but if you're working on something please let me know so i won't go ahead without you finishing.

Of course, feedback about titles suggested by others is also welcome, just be constructive.

Quite a substantial task.
I'll start getting together some ideas of my own, I encourage the rest of our brethren to do the same.

UPDATE:
It seems we are getting more titles than originally expected.

Main guild still gets 31 titles between 0 and 150, but we also get 25 titles between 30 and 150 for each of our paths (Kwon, Daisho and Hakushi). It will probably work like if you choose a path you can switch between displaying the normal guild's guild title, and the path's.

Regardless, here is a list i compiled for the main guild, please make comments/suggestions if you have any. We will not get any titles until we have a list ready for all 4 sets of titles.

0 Sweeper
5 Brawler
10 Apprentice of the Katana
15 Herbalist
20 Scribe
25 Student of the Katana
30 Student of the Dojang
35 Pupil of Meditation
40 Follower of the Way
45 Pupil of Balance
50 Adept of Paths
55 Adept of Chi
60 Adept of the Katana
65 Shuriken Expert
70 Adept of Solitude
75 Adept of Herbalism
80 Adept of Abstinence

105 Monk of Purity
110 Master of the Katana
115 Master of Dexterity

just some suggestions based on khaji's posting.

0 Sweeper

possibly:

0 Janitor (only mention this, as it encompasses sweeping as well)<G>

another idea, move True Master to GR150 title, and remove spiritual lord(true master following all the master titles)

and in place of gr120 title, maybe Blessed Monk. or at 150 Blessed Monk, or Blessed Master. etc. Holy Man/Woman.

Master of Dexterity could become Master of Attacks, or Master of Speed.(master of dexterity sounds weird)
Master of Combat, Master of unarmed Combat, just ideas.

asked for suggestions, here ya go : )

I actually already sent a list to admin.
I don't mind withdrawing what i sent, but it would be a problem if a single path has unique titles all the way and the others don't...
Got suggestions about how to put what you did into the format we used, or maybe you want to make them for all 3 paths?

As it's been almost a month since the last post I can only imagine the titles have already been confirmed with Admin, but if not, I do have a few suggestions below, and some explanations of my reasoning below the table.
LevelMain Guild - CyanHakushi - GreenDaisho - YellowKwon - Red

15Herbalist
20Scribe

140True MasterGrandmaster of NatureGrandmaster of WisdomGrandmaster of Force
145Enlightened OneSaint of NatureSaint of KnowledgeSaint of Might
150Divine SoulNature's SpiritSavant of WisdomRighteous Fist
  • Gardener. I didn't like "Brawler" in the main set of titles, it felt too brutish, and while I've got some brutish titles within the Kwon Path, I think they "fit" there, and lend it an air of uniqueness. You also don't have to display the path title, but you would have to display "Brawler". I felt like "Sweeper" fit with the monk entering the Monk's courtyard, and Gardener with exploring the gardens. This sort of exploration feels appropriate between guild level 5 and guild level 10, based on my own training.
  • Initiate, Novitiate, Neophyte. I felt like each set of path titles should start with the unique identifier but one that in each case shows they're "new" to the path, and wanting to learn more about their specific "thing" (Nature, Scrolls, Combat). I particularly wanted to mention the term "combat" because I believe "unarmed combat" deserves recognition as a skill our Guild specialises in.
  • Follower of. I felt that since the main Guild title (which was in Brother Khaji's original submission) was "Follower of the Way", it made sense for each path (or "way") to have its own "Follower of" title. Hakushi stayed with nature, but I felt that both Daisho and Kwon needed a change from "scrolls" and "combat" respectively. Combat felt too generic at this stage of training (you'll note that there are no more "of combat" titles after that point), and while I did maintain "Scrolls" during the rest of the Daisho Path, something about "Follower of Scrolls" just didn't sound right in my head.
  • Guild Level 50 is marked out as the beginning of the "adept" titles, a recognition of the aptitude of those who have progressed that far within their training. They are no longer apprentices, but beginning to gain mastery (while not yet being masters). Like the "Follower of" titles, I felt like since the main title was "Adept of Paths", it seemed only right that each path have its own "Adept of" title, one that best encapsulated the path itself.
  • I preferred "Purity" to "Chi", simply as I believe it's more general, not necessarily tied to any belief system about the way the cosmos works.
  • There is a more nuanced Adept title within the Paths at guild level 55, to show how devoting oneself to a Path allows one to gain a true mastery by narrowing the focus on specific sub-sets of the Path, until mastery of each is obtained, leading to mastery over the Path as a whole. That's just my take on it, feel free to switch them over with Guild Level 50 if you feel the need to.
  • Seeker of. I felt like each path could do with a title that showed that after "following", you then begin "seeking", to grow and progress. That's why I chose "knowledge" for the Daisho, "remedies" for the Hakushi and "control" for the Kwon, the three things that I feel like each path is always "seeking" more of.
  • Guild Level 65, I felt like each path deserved another unique title. I generally tried to the keep the majority of titles within the paths "similar" to one another, to show that we are ultimately one Guild, united, but it's also good to encourage people's progress by giving them unique titles within their path. I particularly liked the play on words, Minister being both a term for a religiously ordained person, but also for how one might "minister remedies to the sick". "Wielder of the Empty Hand" felt like a nice way to showcase how, even when our hands are empty, we still wield a mighty weapon; the fists themselves.
  • Guild Level 70, I felt like "Adept of Devotion" fitted nicely with the idea that this is where the "Devout of" titles began in Brother Khaji's list. I changed "Devout of" to "Devotee of" as it felt more like a "title" a person might hold. I also tried to be focussed within each path, both for this and Guild Level 75. I feel this fits with becoming more "senior" and more focussed.
  • Guild Level 80. I didn't like "Abstinence" in the main Guild Titles, it felt too deterministic. While many of us do choose a life of abstinence, I'm not sure it's necessarily going to be the case for every monk who joins our order. Some might enjoy a life of great largesse, especially having gained that sort of stature within the lands. This is partly why I gave each path another truly unique title at this stage, as it's a stage few of our order have reached.
  • Guild Level 90. I felt like "Monk of" followed by something representing the path seemed the best choice, progressing to gaining some mastery over a "narrow" set of skills at Guild Level 95 and even broader mastery over your path at Guild Level 100.
  • Guild Level 105. Each path gets a "Keeper of" title, to show that this is the stage at which you're so senior that your role is to be a guardian of the Guild's values, and pass on your expertise to the next generation.
  • Guild Level 110. Each path begins a series of uniques.
    • Hakushi begins with Nature's Pestle, to show you are able to instinctively find any herb you need, and know what to do with it, how to treat it, to get the result you want. Then you begin teaching your knowledge ("preaching"; deacon ranks below priest, archbishop above priest, cardinal above archbishop) ending with "of nature", the pinnacle of your path.
    • Daisho begins with curating the archives, taking care of the very information future generations will use to learn from. Then you begin to instruct scribing skills, then lecture in making and reading scrolls, and then begin teaching your own insights and eventually progress to academic scholarship, becoming a philosopher, expanding the boundaries of our current knowledge to pass on to those who will teach and instruct others in it.
    • The Kwon progresses through a series of brutal titles, to show progressing levels of control which will eventually allow you to train young monks in combat. Only those who truly have mastered the shedding of blood and breaking of bones can train with an apprentice monk without completely obliterating them, yet still able to cause them enough pain to aid their studies. I'm sure we can all remember bruises given to us by the guild's tutors, but we also recognise that without those wounds, we might never have learned. Eventually you will gain sufficient mastery to discipline young monks, hence the Wielder of Discipline title, and then you are able to begin training (Shidoin), and progress eventually to Sensei
  • Master of Paths at Guild Level 130 because that's where the series of uniques within the paths meets the Grandmaster set of titles, and that feels like the point at which you've mastered the Paths.
  • Devoted Master at Guild Level 135 because you're continuing to show devotion, even though you've already mastered the Paths.
  • True Master at Guild Level 140, because that's the final set of Grandmaster ones within the Paths, and that feels like the point where one has attained "true mastery".
  • Enlightened One at Guild Level 145, and within the paths by this point you've earned sainthood for your continued dedication. You are a symbol of your path, a beacon to others.
  • Divine Soul at Guild Level 150, because having achieved enlightenment and still continued your training, you are now as close as a mortal can come to the divine itself. Enlightenment is about the mind, divinity about the soul. For me the soul is the pinnacle of a monk's life. Equally, having attained sainthood within your path, it seems fitting to get one final unique title that shows you have transcended and become "at one" with your path.
I hope these prove useful, but even if the titles have already been decided, I hope they are at least interesting to you to read. Thank you for your time, my Brothers and Sisters.

My changes:
Kept most of Baraspaur's main guild titles but swapped the last two as I like Enlightened One better and brought back Adept of the Flying Star as we get shurikens at that portal and i think it is worth commemorating.

Hakushi is mostly Baraspaur's list

Daisho is mostly Baraspaur's list with some of herman's mixed in

Kwon is mostly Baraspaur's list with some changes due to being too brutal (mostly adapted from herman's list). Monks are not berserkers so i find some of the titles too much, they fight with grace more than with brutality. I also have great hatred of using foreign words.

Do everyone find the list agreeable? And the colors (each path having a different color)?
We can't please everyone 100%, but i think it has enough of everyone's work to be enough.

Excellent work Brother Khaji, that's a fine list of titles, and I feel as if the improvements you made to my suggestions using the work of Brother Herman and your own earlier work are excellent and much better than what I had previously suggested. It just goes to show what we're capable of when we work as one, united as Brothers.

I would, however, humbly suggest that both "Guru" and "Sensei" are foreign words and both have found their way into our tongue. "Sensei" just feels more fitting within the Kwon's focus on martial arts; Gurus tend to be more philosophical in nature. That's why rather than incorporate "Guru" within the Kwon path, I would suggest we find ways to incorporate it within the Daisho. I would also like to highlight a couple of Brother Herman's superb suggestions. "Guardian of Secrets" is possibly my favourite title in the entire list, across any of the paths, and I feel as though it should be a little higher. Likewise with "Powerhouse of Control" and "Essence of Resolution". I also tried to include "Mentor" because I like that a lot. Finally I made some changes to my own suggested Hakushi titles, with the benefit of hindsight.

For the Hakushi:

115: Doctor of Herblore (I like the play on words. "Doctor" is both a medical term and a term for an expert)
120: Deacon of Treatments (despite "Priest of Treatments" being my suggestion, with hindsight it could be better)

For the Daisho:

Guild Level 65: Guru of Manuscripts (Scribe is a "main guild" title so this makes the path title more unique)
Guild Level 115 Guru of Cabalism
Guild Level 120 Steward of Wisdom
Guild Level 125 Guardian of Secrets

For the Kwon:

Guild Level 80: Mentor of Tenacity
Guild Level 110: Sensei of Discipline
Guild Level 115: Essence of Resolution
Guild Level 120: Mentor of Brawn
Guild Level 125: Powerhouse of Control
Guild Level 130: Sensei of the Empty Hand

The overall feel of the titles, however, seems more or less perfect, and while I do feel there's room for a little "tweaking", there isn't much that needs changing in my humble opinion. The overall "theme" seems to fit our humble Guild nicely.

Re: Guild Titles

I feel that while both Guru and Sensei are foreign in origin, Guru was incorporated into the language and Sensei wasn't. (for one thing my spell checker only marks Sensei as being a typo, but I'll go with it for the uniqueness of titles.

Here is the updated table after changes, I hope it is ok and i didn't ruin anything by mistake:

Fantastic work Brother Khaji. I'm honoured to have been able to contribute towards what will hopefully prove to be a popular set of titles with our Brothers and Sisters. I believe we would also become the first guild to have such titles bestowed upon us, so we must commend you, as Guildmaster, for the fine job you're doing so far.
